What is Microneedling and is it Really Safe?

September 9, 2019

Everyone wants younger looking skin, but what lengths would you go to get it? Would you insert micro-fine needles into your face? Well, that’s exactly what beauty buffs – and celebs – are doing right now and it’s known as Microneedling. Whether your goal is to get rid of acne scars or boost collagen, this treatment has got everyone talking and here’s why…

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a form of a ‘dermaroller’ (a skincare device that’s used to rejuvenate the skin) treatment that uses micro-fine needles to prick the skin. The procedure is also known as collagen induction therapy as it’s used to generate new collagen in order to minimise the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles and large pores.

How does Microneedling work?

Micro-fine needles are used to subtly puncture the skin in order to rejuvenate and produce more collagen. The Microneedling device uses around 10+ needles and vibrates at a high power while piercing the surface of the skin thousands of times. The needles typically range between 0.5mm and 2.5mm in diameter and only enter the skin at surface-level (the pain really depends on the size of the needle).

While the thought of having pinpricks all over your face may be slightly off-putting, it’s actually the result of these pinpricks that cause the skin to respond and heal by producing new tissue. The outcome? Firmer, smoother and more toned skin!

What are the skin benefits?

Microneedling can result in a number of short- and long-term skin benefits – these include:

Is it the same thing as a Vampire Facial?

You may have seen the Vampire Facial trending on social a while back – does Kim K ring any bells?! While Microneedling and the Vampire Facial may look similar visually, they’re not the same. A Vampire Facial uses PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) which involves drawing blood from your body and then reapplying it into the face to promote cell renewal. Microneedling alone on the other hand does not involve placing your blood back into the skin.
