For the first time in many years, the skies over Downtown Dubai won’t be filled with a spectacular fireworks display that’s become an iconic part of NYE celebrations here. Because let’s be fair: nothing sparkles like the Burj Khalifa on December 31.
Instead, property developer Emaar plans on lighting things up in a slightly different way for 2018. Here’s what we know so far…
An alternative to the Burj Khalifa fireworks
Fireworks will be scrapped this year and replaced with a light installation that will canvas the Downtown skyline on December 31. On its Facebook account, Emaar wrote “Burj Khalifa is set to steal the show & #LightUp2018!”

A “magnificent show” is coming…
It’s no surprise that the announcement has left some residents and visitors confused and disappointed. After all, the Burj Khalifa fireworks show is one of the biggest events of the year, drawing in more than a million people to the Downtown area.
That said, we have no doubt that we’ll witness something extraordinary when the clock hits midnight on New Year’s Eve. In our experience, Dubai never fails to dazzle when its got a moment in the spotlight.
