We’ve all witnessed it: pedestrians crossing the road with their eyes glued to a smartphone, paying no attention to their surroundings. But a new system of smart signals in Dubai is aiming to make things safer for everyone. Here’s what you should know…
‘Smart Pedestrian Signals Project’ unveiled in Dubai
Dubai has unveiled new smart signals at 15 locations across the emirate, the first system of its kind in the region. Using sensor technology built into the ground, it perceives the pedestrian movement on the pavement and automatically readjusts the signal time remaining. The aim is to help keep traffic flowing smoothly and potentially cut down waiting times for pedestrians trying to cross.
The smart signals have been installed in several locations including Al Muraqqabat, Al Rigga, Al Mankhool, Baniyas, 2nd of December Street, and Al Maktoum and Shaikh Khalifa Streets. They’ve also been introduced at Al Barsha and City Walk districts.
