With so much international attention currently focused on Dubai’s drinking laws, we thought it might be a good time to give you a refresher on playing things safe.
When it comes to purchasing and consuming alcohol in the emirate, you’re legally obliged to have a liquor license. The application process is surprisingly easy, simple and cheap – here’s what you need to know:
Requirements:
- Must be a non-Muslim resident of Dubai
- Over the age of 21
- Monthly salary of more than AED 3,000
How to apply for a liquor license:
Collect an application from any MMI or African + Eastern store across town, and submit it with the following docs:
- Completed application form that’s been stamped by your employer
- Copy of your passport
- Copy of your residence visa
- Copy of your labour card (or salary certificate if you work in a Free Zone)
- Copy of your tenancy contract (if the contract is not in your name, you must obtain a copy of the lease holder’s passport and residence visa, along with a No Objection Certificate).
- One passport-sized photograph
- AED 170 (Municipality fee)
The application will take around 2-4 weeks to process, and the shop will contact you by phone once your license is ready to be collected. Keep in mind that there are monthly limits to the amount of alcohol you’re allowed to purchase (depending on your salary).
