Singapore’s now-legendary Changi Airport is hands down the best airport in the world. Thanks to its over-the-top amenities, it’s the kind of place where missing a flight doesn’t seem so bad. 1. It has stunning gardens
Famous for its focus on nature, Changi Airport literally has millions of flowers, plants and trees throughout its terminals. A favorite hangout is the Butterfly Garden which houses 1,000 tropical butterflies along with a 6-meter grotto-waterfall. You’ll also find a rooftop garden of sunflowers and cacti, along with a gorgeous orchid garden and koi ponds — not a bad way to relax, eh?
2. Rest lounges are free-to-use
Changi Airport wants you to chill out… on the house! Transit passengers will find free-to-use snooze lounges throughout the terminals for anyone in need of a nap during layovers. If that’s not enough, you’ll also find free foot massage chairs for your aching calves. Sounds a bit like a traveler’s paradise…
3. There’s also a free cinema
Running 24 hours a day, movie lovers can take advantage of the free cinema at Changi Airport that plays a range of recent Blockbuster hits. The free entertainment amenities don’t even end there though — they also offer complimentary gaming stations along with an MTV Booth for karaoke fans.
4. The art is breathtaking
Probably the thing that passengers photograph most at Changi Airport is a hypnotizing art installation called Kinetic Rain, made of 1,216 dancing bronze droplets. Throughout the airport’s terminals you’ll find other reasons to take cool snaps — from the kinetic floating petals in Terminal 4 to the incredible Green Wall packed with more than a 100,000 plants.
5. They offer free city tours
Got time to kill while in transit? If you have at least 5.5 hours before your flight, the airport will offer you a complimentary city tour (lasting around 2.5 hours). Passengers can choose between a Heritage Tour that includes cultural districts like Chinatown and Little India, or they can opt for a City Sights Tour showcasing modern Singapore… including the iconic Supertree Grove and Marina Bay Sands hotel.
5. The airport is super high-tech
Practically everything at Changi Airport’s newest Terminal 4 is automated for self-service, from checking in to printing boarding passes, bag drop, boarding and even immigration (with help of a facial recognition system.) When passing through security, your shoes can stay on and electronics remain in your bag as well. They also offer free Wi-Fi, free local calls, 3,400 USB charging stations and loads of Internet kiosks if you don’t have your own device.
6. Oh, there’s also a rooftop pool
Located at Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel in Terminal 1, anyone passing through Changi can access the rooftop pool and jacuzzi. The entry cost isn’t bad either, at around $13 USD per person — this includes a towel, use of the shower facilities and a non-alcoholic drink from the poolside bar. Best part is that you can hang out here as long as you want…
7. They’re opening the ‘Jewel’ in 2019
Changi Airport plans to hold onto the title of ‘Best Airport in the World’ with the opening of the Jewel, a behemoth complex that will feature an indoor waterfall called the Rain Vortex, a five-story tall garden, a glass-bottom canopy bridge and so much more.
