Why is Everyone Drinking Bone Broth?

September 10, 2019

They say a cup of bone broth a day keeps the doctor away. The bone broth trend has been warming the appetites of wellness buffs for a while now, but what exactly is it and is it really good for you?

What is bone broth?

Bone broth is made by simmering the bones of beef or poultry for a really, really long time (usually more than 24 hours). It’s often confused with stock, however, it’s not actually the same thing. The main difference is broth is simmered for a much longer period of time (the longer it cooks, the more nutrients you get from the bones).

How do you make it?

The bonier the bones are, the better; think along the lines of chicken necks and beef knuckles. You might not easily find these types of bones at the supermarket, so your best bet is to try your local butcher. Once you have the bones, all you need to do is throw them into a pot of water with your favourite veggies, herbs and spices… and simmer away! A lot of bone broth recipes even include ingredients such as apple cider vinegar and pink Himalayan salt for that added nutritional value.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to get your hands on bone broth, there are companies around that can deliver it daily to your door. We regularly use Theo’s Point – an online service that delivers organic beef, chicken and vegetarian bone broth around Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

What are the health benefits?

While the taste of bone broth may be slightly off-putting to begin with, the health benefits it claims to offer sure do make up for it. The minerals, vitamins, fatty acids and nutrients found in bone broth play a key role in helping to build and strengthen your bones. Here’s a handful of other health benefits bone broth is known for:

  1. Helps support leaky gut syndrome
  2. Improves collagen production
  3. Increases energy levels and helps you sleep better
  4. Boosts your immune system
  5. Strengthens bones
  6. Helps with weight loss and digestion
  7. Reduces joint pain
